Electronic Music Foundation presents the first annual EMF Lab, a new concert series at The Flea Theater. EMF Lab introduces emerging young composers and performers of electronic music, paired with established leaders in the field, in a series of concerts highlighting three strains of electronic music being explored in the twenty-first century.
Tuesday, May 20: Classical Electricity
The opening concert begins with works for classical instrumental ensembles with interactive electronics by composers Jenny Olivia Johnson, Evan Antonellis, and Wil Smith. The second half features the work of award-winning Alaskan composer and sound artist Matthew Burtner, with performances by renowned musicians Minna Chung (cello), Morris Palter (percussion), and Jaunelle Celaire (voice).
Wednesday, May 21: Visual Music
The second of the three EMF Lab concerts features performers working with interactive audio/visual systems. Jennifer Stock opens for the inimitable duo of Luke Dubois and Todd Reynolds.
Thursday, May 22: Ensemble or Band?
The series finale showcases three groups that beg the question: ensemble or band? The Air Band uses home-made handheld electronic instruments to control synthesis and sampling through intuitive gestural performance. Rusty Limited Company is an electroacoustic improvisational quartet drawing on experimental and pop traditions. Text of Light features Alan Licht (guitar) Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo (guitar), and Ulrich Krieger (saxophone, electronics) improvising experimental music to Stan Brakhage films.
Performances at 7pm. Tickets are $15 ($10 for students and seniors).
